Diabetes Medicine Bag: Designed to Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Among Aboriginal Youth

Spring Has Sprung – Part 1

Help the children in your program to understand and share in the excitement
of the new growth brought about by spring.

Planting a garden and experimenting with the foods that you grow, is
a great way to encourage children to try new foods.

Start the seeds indoors in a spot that is not exposed to direct sunlight
but still receives natural light. The best seeds to start indoors are
tomatoes and herbs. These require longer growing times and should be well
developed in time for planting in the garden.

What you need:

Instructions:

  • potting soil
  • peat moss
  • seeds
  • small containers
  • spray bottle
  • water
  1. Fill containers with mixture of peat moss and potting soil. Make the
    soil moist by adding water.
  2. Plant seeds according to directions on the package.
  3. Spray gently with water.
  4. Keep the soil moist by spraying frequently. You may also want to visit
your local gardening centre and purchase plastic trays with a clear
plastic dome to get seeds started. The clear dome helps to keep the
growing environment moist. Or, cut the tops and bottoms off pop containers
to use as trays and domes.
  5. The seeds should germinate within a couple of days.
  6. As the plants mature, plant them in larger containers and thin out
the plants. When gardening season has arrived, move the plants outside
and transplant them into your garden.
