Diabetes Medicine Bag: Designed to Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Among Aboriginal Youth

Fish Pond

This idea is adapted from the “Good Start, Eat Smart” booklet
produced by the Dairy Farmers of Ontario and The Ontario Milk Marketing
Board.

A large piece of cardboard can be painted blue and the foods placed in
a box on the other side of the cardboard Children then fish for foods
from the four food groups.

You could have children fish for a lunch including items from all four
food groups, or select a food group and have children only keep those
foods from the selected group. The game can be adapted to fit the nutrition
lesson. This is also a great way to encourage children to try the “catch
of the day”.

  • Have students draw and cut out shapes of fish from cardboard or Bristol
    board.
  • Select pictures of foods from the four food groups.
  • Glue a picture of a food on to the fish and attach a paper clip to
    the mouth of the fish.
  • Use a small fishing rod or make a fishing rod using a stick.
  • Attach a strong magnet to one end of a string and tie the other end
of the string to the stick or fishing rod.
